How the score is built ยท method and assumptions

The Planetary Consciousness Index (PCI) is a single 0โ€“100 figure that summarises how much a generation lives with broad, reflective, planet-scale awareness rather than narrow, reactive, screen-bound attention. It is a heuristic model for structured thinking, not an empirical measurement. Every number on this page is generated by the transparent rule below so that readers can interrogate it.

The index blends five dimensions (shown as bars for the selected cohort): Attention Depth (capacity for sustained, undistracted focus), Moralโ€“Spiritual Depth (ethical seriousness and inner life), Planetary Orientation (concern that extends beyond the self to the shared world), Agency & Productivity (ability to act and create, not only consume), and Virtual Embeddedness (how much of life is lived inside mediated, algorithmic space). Higher Virtual Embeddedness pulls the composite down; the other four lift it.

Each cohortโ€™s score is the sum of three transparent components:

  1. Cohort baseline. Set by how much of a generationโ€™s formative childhood was spent offline. The 1980 cohort starts near 60; every five-year-younger cohort begins about 2 points lower, reflecting a shorter pre-digital childhood, with a floor of 30.
  2. Era effect. A decade-by-decade adjustment after 2030 that depends entirely on the chosen scenario โ€” the same technology, three different relationships to it.
  3. Age effect. A life-stage adjustment that begins after age 40, modelling whether maturity deepens awareness or whether long exposure erodes it.

The three scenarios change only the era and age effects, never the technology: Fragmentation โ€” attention and moral depth erode; scores drift down and fall faster with age (capped at 62). Managed Dependence โ€” AI keeps life comfortable but flat; scores stay nearly level and sag only gently. Planetary Awakening โ€” digital systems become tools rather than cages; scores rise through the century and even grow in later life (capped at 92).

Read these as scenarios, not forecasts. The PCI has no units and is not calibrated against survey or clinical data; it is a reasoning device for comparing generations under different assumptions. Limitations to keep in mind: it treats each five-year cohort as uniform, ignores culture, geography and inequality within a generation, and assumes technology unfolds identically across scenarios. Its value is in the shape of the curves and the differences between scenarios, not in any single digit.
